On the Jeep Wrangler JL and Jeep Gladiator JT, there are two different side cowl panel designs depending on the hood used on the vehicle.

The side cowl panels are the small triangular trim pieces located:

• At the base of the windshield
• Between the rear edge of the hood
• And the A-pillar near the front doors

These panels are designed to match the shape of the hood, which is why they are not interchangeable.

The Two Types of Cowl Panels

1. Standard Hood Cowl Panel

Used on most JL and JT models with the standard production hood.

Examples include:

• Jeep Wrangler JL Sport 
• Jeep Wrangler JL Sahara
• Jeep Gladiator JT Sport
• Jeep Gladiator JT Overland

Design

• The panel slopes downward as it moves toward the front of the vehicle.
• This matches the lower profile of the standard hood.

The trim sits flush against the hood, creating a smooth body line.

2. Performance Hood Cowl Panel

Used on vehicles with taller high-clearance hoods.

Examples include:

• Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 or base models with the steel performance hood package 
• Jeep Gladiator Mojave / Willys '41 
• Some diesel-equipped JL/JT models
   

Design

• The panel is much flatter as it extends forward from the windshield.
• This keeps the trim higher to match the taller hood.
   

The trim aligns correctly with the raised hood profile.

Why This Matters

Because the two cowl panels follow different hood shapes, they cannot be swapped without causing fitment issues.

For example:

• Installing a standard cowl panel on a performance hood will create a large gap between the hood and the trim.
• The trim will sit too low, making the fit look incorrect.

If your hood has a raised center section or heat extractor vent in the center of the hood , it is likely a performance hood, which requires the flatter cowl panel design.
