When you’re off-road or on difficult terrain, the right lighting matters for both safety and performance. The KC SlimLite® family now comes in three sizes: the SlimLite 4", SlimLite 6", and SlimLite 8". All three keep the classic round KC look and use the same accessory system. Each has a 100% full-power mode and a dimmed mode, and each Master Kit includes SAE Driving Beam shields, black protective covers, and a wiring harness with a 3-position switch.
Picking the right size for the right mounting position is the key to getting the most from your setup. This guide covers where each SlimLite works best.
Which SlimLite Is Right for Your Mount?
- SlimLite 4": The compact option, built for places where space is tight, such as A-pillars, compact bumpers, behind-the-grille mounts, and custom tabs. Choose the SL4 when a larger light won’t fit cleanly or when you want a smaller auxiliary light.
- SlimLite 6": The best all-around choice. Its slim 2.9" depth fits on A-pillars, bumpers, and overhead mounts across Jeeps, trucks, and SUVs.
- SlimLite 8": The largest and brightest SlimLite. It’s built for full-size trucks, vans, and Jeeps that need full-size output, and its shallow housing still fits tight bumpers on vans and trucks.
Front Bumper Mounting (SL4, SL6, SL8)
The front bumper is the classic spot for SlimLites, and all three sizes are rated for it. Bumper mounting puts the light low and forward, which is good for lighting the trail directly in front of the vehicle so you can spot obstacles, wildlife, and changes in terrain.
Bumper mounting is also the most street-friendly position. With the included SAE Driving Beam shields installed, SlimLites mounted level with or below your headlights can be used on public roads in most states (local regulations apply). Use them as you would your high beams.
- SL4: Good for compact bumpers or when you want added light without a bulky look.
- SL6: A balanced bumper light for most Jeeps, trucks, and SUVs.
- SL8: Full-size output for full-size trucks and vans, with a housing shallow enough for tight bumpers.
Grille Mounting (SL4, plus vehicle-specific kits)
Behind-the-grille mounting gives a clean, integrated look and keeps the lights low for road use. The SL4 is designed for this position. Vehicle-specific grille mount bundles are also available for some vehicles, such as the Mercedes Sprinter and select RAM models. Check the vehicle selector on our website for options for your vehicle.
Overhead / Roof Rack Mounting (SL6, SL8)
Mounting SlimLites overhead raises the light source, so it reaches farther and casts fewer shadows across open terrain. This position is especially useful for long-distance visibility. The SL6 and SL8 are both rated for overhead mounting, and the SL8’s output makes it a strong choice for full-size rigs.
Important: lights mounted above your headlights are not street legal for on-road use, even with SAE shields. Depending on your state, overhead lights may need to stay covered on public roads. The dimmed mode is useful for controlled light on group trail rides, but it does not replace covering the lights on the street.
A-Pillar / Ditch Mounting (SL4, SL6, SL8)
Mounting SlimLites on the A-pillars, at the base of the windshield, aims light to the sides of your path. This helps you see around corners and through tight, technical trails, and it reduces shadows from the vehicle’s own hood.
All three sizes are rated for A-pillar mounting. The SL4 and SL6 are the most common choices because they fit cleanly in this tight space. Vehicle-specific A-pillar/ditch mount bundles are available for many Jeep, Toyota, Ford, RAM, Sprinter, and Can-Am models.
Tailor Your Beam with Shields
Every SlimLite comes as a Spot beam. Snap-on shields let you change the beam to suit where the light is mounted:
- SAE Driving shields (Clear, included; Selective Yellow, sold separately): For on-road use when mounted at or below headlight height.
- Spot shields (Clear or Amber): Off-road use with maximum distance.
- Spread shields (Amber): Off-road use with a wider beam, good for A-pillar mounts.
- Stone Guards: Added protection that can stay on while the light is in use.
Shield availability varies by size. Check the accessories on each light’s product page.
Before You Install
- Check your power draw. Higher output means higher amperage. At full power, a pair of SL4s draws about 7 A, SL6s about 12.7 A, and SL8s about 23 A. Make sure your battery and alternator can support your setup.
- Aim your lights. Proper aiming is key in every position, and especially for overhead mounts.
- Lock them down. Light lock security nut sets are available for SlimLites.
Choosing the right mounting position for your KC SlimLites depends on your vehicle, your terrain, and how you drive. Whether you go with the compact SL4 on your A-pillars, the all-around SL6 on your bumper, or the full-size SL8 on a roof rack, proper installation and aiming will get the most out of your lights.
